Arteta - The reasons why we had to let Emi go
Mikel Arteta freely admits that he would have loved to have kept Emi Martinez this summer - but could not stand in the way of the goalkeeper's desire to join Aston Villa. The Argentinean stopper was in inspired form towards the end of last term, but with Bernd Leno established as our No 1, the best option for all parties was for a new direction.
"Obviously, it wasn't in my plans to sell him," Arteta said. "But we gave him the chance because he deserved it.
"He performed really, really well but we have to balance the books. We have to make the right choices in the market and obviously, I couldn't guarantee him to be the number one.
