Stunning number of shirt sales Premier League clubs need to cover summer transfer fees
Premier League clubs will have to sell a huge number of shirts to cover their enormous summer transfer spending. The 20 clubs in the English top-flight spent more than £1.2billion on strengthening their squads before the window slammed shut on Tuesday. But the spending was not equally divided, with some clubs spending nine figures on one player while other capped it off at just a couple of million. Clubs have a way of getting their money back, though, by selling shirts with their new stars’ names - as demonstrated by PSG’s acquisition of Lionel Messi.
