Why Shkodran Mustafi's start to life with Arsenal could spell the end for Per Mertesacker

Mertesacker, who joined the Gunners in 2011, had been vice-captain to Mikel Arteta at the Emirates, so naming the defender as the club's new captain seemed like the logical choice.  However, Mertesacker had just been ruled out for four months with a knee injury, meaning Wenger was in the market for a new centre-back.  And there had been questions surrounding the former Germany international's future all summer after a number of shaky performances last season.  Naming Mertesacker as Arsenal captain in August suggested that Wenger only wanted to sign another back-up defender.
